Make Learning Place Value a Day at the Beach!

Building Place Value Understanding with a Fun Sandcastle Craft is the perfect hands-on and engaging way to teach place value to your K-2 students! My Sandcastle Place Value Craft is the perfect way to combine math learning with creativity! This adorable activity helps young learners visualize place value concepts while building their own sandcastle masterpiece.

How the Sandcastle Place Value Craft Works

This activity is simple to prep and can be tailored to different skill levels. Here’s how it works:

  1. Choose a Number – Students select or are assigned a number to build. You can have your students write the number on a starfish or shell to add to their project.
  2. Build the Sandcastle – Each part of the sandcastle can easily represents a different place value (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.). by adding blocks where they would like. This can be as easy as counting out 5 or 6 blocks for your youngest learners to numbers well into the hundreds.
  3. Label the Parts – Students will work on a reporting sheet to add to their art project that showcases more about the number they created.
  4. Add a Personal Touch – Let students decorate their sandcastle with fun details like seashells, flags, or beach-themed stickers.

Why Use a Craft for Teaching Place Value?

Young students thrive on interactive and tactile learning experiences. A craft-based activity like this one allows children to:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of place value by constructing numbers in a meaningful way.
  • Strengthen fine motor skills through cutting, gluing, and assembling.
  • Stay engaged and excited about math!

Ways to Use This Craft in the Classroom

  • Math Centers: A perfect independent or small-group station.
  • Whole-Class Activity: Use it as a hands-on lesson to reinforce place value.
  • Interactive Bulletin Board Display: Showcase student work and reinforce the concept throughout the year.
  • Partner Work: Students can quiz each other on the place value of their numbers.
