🌟 Back to School Bucket List Craft & Writing Activity for K–5

August 1, 2025

The first week of school sets the tone for the rest of the year. Teachers everywhere are looking for meaningful activities that build classroom community, set goals, and get students excited about their new grade level. That’s exactly why I created this Back to School Bucket List Craft and Writing Activity . It is the perfect blend of fun, reflection, and creativity for Kindergarten through 5th grade!

πŸ“ Why Use a Back to School Bucket List?

Starting the year with a bucket list helps students:

  • Set goals for what they want to achieve
  • Build excitement for the learning and events ahead
  • Strengthen classroom community by sharing common hopes and dreams
  • Express themselves through both writing and crafting

Instead of just telling students what to expect, this activity puts the focus on what they are most excited about β€” whether it’s learning multiplication, going on a field trip, joining a reading challenge, or making new friends.

How the Activity Works

  1. Create a Class Anchor Chart
As a class, brainstorm all the fun things students can look forward to in their grade. This could include academic milestones or concepts they will learn. ( how to read, multiplication, etc. ) It can also cinclude holiday parties, special projects, assemblies, or field trips.
  2. Students Build Their Bucket Lists
Using the resource templates, each student chooses from the anchor chart to build their own personalized bucket list. This helps them take ownership of their goals and dreams for the year.
  3. Craft + Writing Integration
Students complete a writing prompt about their bucket list and then create a fun bucket-themed craft. With grade-level templates available for K–5, it’s easy to differentiate!
  4. Display with Pride
Create a bulletin board for a vibrant display that celebrates student voice & gives your classroom a welcoming back-to-school vibe. It would be super cute stapled or even hung up with clothespins. Don’t forget to add the darling shovel with their name for the extra touch.
