Poems in the classroom are sooo fun and even better when you can incorporate sight words with them…no matter the age really.
Not only is it good for young readers to be able to rhyme and recognize or generate rhymes and work with word families etc. But, they enjoy them and find success with them – which I call a HUGE win for young readers.
My poems are mostly seasonal as well as have sight words within them…so your little readers can find success with finding and reading them…they are always so proud!
Here are some ways my poems for a year have been used:
My poems have been used in a Poetry Anthology . Teachers have created a notebook to store and collect the poems for the year and highlight them at Open House and then send home at the end of the year.
Some teachers like to write the poems out on sentence strips and use it as a rotation during reading groups. Students then use pointers to find the sight words and read the poem.
Some teachers have easily added them to Seesaw and made them interactive for both in person as well as a distant learning activity.
Some teachers use them with buddy readers. Older peers read the poem and then have their younger peers find the sight words.

Poems for a Year
These aren’t your typical sight word poems that have the same sight word repeated with an easy to read decodable sentence. These poems in the classroom are seasonal, thematic poems that you can use all year long ( I have over 3 sets of these ). They can be incorporated into science and social studies units too based on some of my topics.
