This back to school playdoh activity is perfect for the first day or week of school! When students are arriving and parents have questions it is an easy activity to keep hands busy. However, I have included an extra purpose to this task!
Ease their fears the first day
I’ve found each year that there are always a handful of kids that are anxious the first day. Maybe they are nervous because they are at a new school, have no friends in your class or miss their parents. Giving them a hands on activity keeps their minds busy and this added purpose of creating something really helps ease their fears.
Have your students not just roll the playdoh around anxiously… give them a purpose to this playdoh activity. Have them create a mold of something they did over the summer. Maybe they create a boat because they went on a cruise, or a tent because they went camping!
Then, once all the parents have left you can ask students to share their creation so they can get to know one another better.
I have included both the gift tag for the ball of playdoh which is easily stapled or clipped to a sandwich bag as well as a poem with directions on creating the molded image. Of course, if you have young learners you will need to read and explain that to them.
